March is National Nutrition Month… something that all of us here at Veggie Fries love to celebrate.
But what does it mean? Carol Chappell, M.S., R.D.N., L.D., (and lecturer at the University of Louisville and clinical dietitian at Genesis Healthcare) had this to say in a recent Courier-Journal post:
“The 2016 theme is ‘Savor the Flavor of Eating Right.’ This is an event created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
This campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity levels. This year, we want to encourage you to take time to enjoy food traditions and appreciate the pleasures, great flavors and social experiences food can add to our lives.
There are four key messages to this years’ campaign. First, we emphasize that the ‘how, when, why and where’ of eating are just as important as what we eat. Making sure to enjoy the sight, sounds, memories and interactions associated with eating are essential to developing an overall healthy eating plan.
Second, we encourage you to develop a mindful eating pattern that includes nutritious and flavorful foods, while also taking the time to enjoy everything that a healthful and tasty meal bring with it. That’s the best way to savor the flavor of eating right!
The third key message is that it is possible to enjoy the taste and flavor of food while still maintaining a healthy diet. Take time to enjoy food traditions and find creative, healthful and nutritious ways to add flavor to food. An eating pattern based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate recommendations can accommodate the food preferences, as well as the cultural traditions and customs of many diverse groups. Eat more of some foods and nutrients and less of others over a lifetime.”
At Veggie Fries, we couldn’t agree more. Nutritious eating can be anything but boring. That’s why we’ve created fries packed with veggie nutrition and flavored with farm-grown herbs and legumes.
Happy Nutrition Month!
